Amazontech 2008 is an international event that aims to contribute toward sustainable development in the Brazilian Amazon and in the Greater Amazon region (i.e., countries that share the Amazon basin) by means of incentives for Science, Technology, and Innovation.
The event will focus on five thematic issues:
- Technology for management and sustainable use of natural resources of the region.
- Bio-industry, bio-energy, and carbon sequestration.
- Social inclusion.
- Technology and innovation for sustainable small-business development.
- Technological alternatives for socioeconomic and environmental sustainability of the region’s ecosystems.
Among the many activities planned, the Amazontech 2008 program includes:
- A Meeting of Governors of the State of the Brazilian Amazon and of the Greater Amazon region;
- A Meeting of State Secretaries of Science and Technology of the Amazon region;
- A Meeting of Deans of Universities of the Brazilian Amazon and Greater Amazon region;
- Exhibitions of Amazonian products;
- Business networking;
- Lectures, courses, panels, workshops, and round-table discussions

“Brazil-Portugal Film Series”
In another cultural promotion, the Consulate General of Brazil in Toronto is organizing a “Brazil-Portugal Film Series”. The initiative is carried through in coordination with the Consulate of Portugal, York University, University of Toronto and the Camões Institute and it has the purpose of presenting movies in Portuguese language to a public of predominantly university students.
The Series are based on literary work taken to the cinema by movie directors from Brazil and Portugal.
It will be presented the following movies during the year: “War of Canudos”, ”Blindness”, “The Mystery of Sintra”, “Fated Love” and “Foreign Land”.
